Soroptimist International is a worldwide organization for today's professional and business women. It's the largest women organization of this kind in the world. The name "soroptimist" is derived from the latin „sorores ad optimum", which means „the women who want to achieve the best".

The organization was grounded in 1921 in Oakland, California and associates more than 100 000 women from 130 countries all over the world.

The members of the individual clubs direct their activities towards the goals of soroptimism:
